Online Tutoring
Small Group Sessions
OUR TEACHERS
Our tutors are fully qualified and active teachers. We only hire teachers with a minimum of 10 years’ experience, who are experts in their field. Throughout all the small group session, students will see the teacher on their screen at all times, alongside the presentation of the teachers work.
YOUR FIRST SESSION
We ask that every new student comes to their first class with plenty of time, allowing at least 5 to 10 minutes before the start of the session for a quick meet with your new teacher to set up the interactive whiteboard. We tend to keep new students on at the end of the first session for feedback and any further discussions. Parents are welcome to join in for this section also, if they wish.
SMALL GROUPS
It’s important for every single student to get plenty of individual attention, so our online tuition classes have a capped number of students.
TEACHING ONE TOPIC AT A TIME
Like school, students are taught one specific topic per lesson with larger topics taking 2 or 3 sessions. This keeps everyone aligned to a single goal of mastering that topic, and we use this approach throughout the academic year to cover the entire syllabus.
NEED HELP WITH SPECIFIC TOPICS?
When a student comes to us with a list of topics that they need specific support with, here at Maths Tutor Direct we tailor packages to suit their needs. We list the classes we can offer if they have already been taught in that Academic year. Class ‘live links’ are charged at £5 each.
COLLABORATIVE VIRTUAL ENVIRONMENT
Just like in a class room environment, our expert teachers make a conscious effort to engage and involve every student in class in order to have productive and helpful conversations. We encourage students to be as interactive as possible and to keep their screen on if they feel comfortable in doing so.
INTERACTIVE WHITEBOARD
In all sessions we give our attendees the option of using the interactive whiteboard function that enables the tutor to see everything that the student writes down. This augments the collaboration between student and tutor to maximise feedback and ultimately enhance the learning experience.
At the start of each session the teacher will share a link (which is sent via the Zoom chat function).
You click on this with the device that you are using, or, better still, send this link to another device. This would mean that you would use one device to watch the zoom session and another one for writing your answers on. It is easier for students if the whiteboard device is touchscreen so that they can write with a finger or stylus pen, but it is also possible to use a mouse.
We highly advise that all students use their interactive white board in order for teachers to clearly see their workings out in order to provide accurate feedback on answers given. Students are welcome to ask questions directly through a session or use the chat function via Zoom or their interactive whiteboard.
Key Stage 2
11 Plus Maths Tuition
What does the 11 Plus maths exam involve?
The 11 Plus maths tests cover a huge range of topics, which your child will be taught throughout Key Stage 2, but at an advanced level. The content of the tests will vary depending on your area; there are a number of key parts which the tests will cover:
- Problem solving skills
- Speed, accuracy
- Fluency
- Mental arithmetic
How can my child prepare for 11 Plus maths?
At Maths Tutor Direct we encourage children to overcome any challenges they might face.
As with all of the elements of the 11 Plus test, the maths paper is designed to assess your child’s intelligence, academic potential and tests them on everything they have learnt from primary school, albeit at a harder level – so they are not easy!
How can we help you prepare?
The GL 11+ consists of:
- Maths
- English
- Verbal reasoning
- Non-verbal reasoning
We hold a Math booster/ Key Stage 2 Math session on a Monday at 6pm-6:45pm. Our math session focuses on improving specific content within numerical mathematics, this will have a huge impact on your child’s understanding and progression within the curriculum of mathematics.
Our 11 Plus skills session is held on a Wednesday at 6:15-7pm. Mrs Johnson’s focus in on preparing for verbal and non-verbal style questions, including tips and strategies.
Key Stage 3
Coming from Key Stage 2, many Year 7 students find the transition to Key Stage 3 and secondary school intimidating and challenging. We make this transition easier by providing the core foundation of the KS3 curriculum, enabling them to get a concrete understanding of the key subjects.
For Year 9 students gearing up to GCSEs, we make every effort to ensure that student knowledge is sound. It’s imperative that students develop the skills and urgency required to take on GCSEs with confidence and these sessions do just that!
Our three different offerings:
Key Stage 3 – Confidence Building
Each Thursday at 16:45 – 17:30
This group is for those students that have missed building blocks from KS2 and have gaps in their knowledge in KS3. It will be steadily paced with lots of individual guidance, feedback and reassurance throughout the session. The teacher will model the examples slowly and enable mastery of the most important elements of KS3 to enable improvement and progression of all students.
These sessions are held by our KS3 specialist, Mrs Anderson.
Key Stage 3 – Intermediate
Each Thursday at 18:00 – 18:45
This small class will be paced slightly quicker as it is catered for more confident students. The pupils in the group will still necessitate direction, but the questioning will require more dynamic thinking. There will opportunities for extension, but this class will still be focused on the mastery of the building block skills of mathematics.
These sessions are held by our KS3 specialist, Mrs Anderson.
Key Stage 3 – Challenge
Each Thursday at 19:00 – 19:45
This group is for confident mathematicians. The students in this class will be pushed as the students are achieving at least the expected levels of KS3. This session will be fast paced recapping KS3 concepts and then testing students with some more complicated applications and exam style questions. Students in this group require resilience and this work will enable students to aim towards being fully prepared for the hardest concepts at GCSE Foundation Tier and possibly those striving to take the Higher Paper.
These sessions are held by our KS3 specialist, Mrs Anderson.
